Switch Up Your Technique

October 2, 2025

We continue to battle low water in area rivers but don't let that stop you from getting out, it hasn't us. You'll just need to switch up your techniques in these conditions to be successful.

If you're going to target smallmouth pay close attention to the what's going on in the river. It's that time of year when you need to. They're starting to move from their summer to their winter spots and being less spread out to more congregated. Where you find the baitfish, you'll find the smallmouth. Lately, that seems to be along and around weedlines. With the low water, they spook easily. Topwater continues to be the ticket. To keep the spook level low, use poppers in size #4 and #6 with longer leaders on 9' 6wts.

If you going after salmon, trout or steelhead, with the low, clear, water you'll want to use indicator rigs. Longer leaders, with AB/BB spilt shot will help you drift through the run and into the pocket water more easily. Eggs, nymphs and stoneflies, in various sizes, have all been working well.

Fall is great time be outside, especially with this warm weather. The shop is loaded with all the gear you need and between all our guides, we still have some salmon, steelhead and smallmouth dates available so swing on in or give us a call.

My wife and I had a great time on our guided fly fishing tour with Tom at Werkman Outfitters. Tom was super nice and very patient with my wife while teaching her fly casting and fishing techniques. If I return to Michigan again for fly fishing I will definitely book another guide with Tom. Absolutely 5 stars.
